Braque began experimenting with printmaking in 1907, shortly after the poet Guillaume Apollinaire introduced him to Picasso. He made ten etchings and drypoints between 1907 and 1913, but few were published at that time; Bass was among the uneditioned plates discovered in Braque’s studio in the late 1940s. The print exemplifies the Analytic Cubist style developed by Braque and Picasso, breaking objects into multiple facets. Bass evokes a scene in a café, with bottles of beer and wine on a table that is suggested by the illusion of woodgrain.
