The painter Malevich and the poet Kruchenykh, both associated with the Russian Futurist movement in the early 1910s, collaborated on several projects, including an opera and booklets of poetry, such as Porosiata. The Russian avant-garde embraced the medium of the book as both inexpensive to produce and, due to the ease of its creation and dissemination, democratic. Malevich’s cover illustration, his first known print, is a lithograph after his 1912 painting Head of a Peasant Girl (now in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam). According to the text, the coauthor of the book was Zina V., age eleven.
