L.2013.6.21: Der Sturm, vol. 7, no. 6 (September 1916)
Founded by the entrepreneurial painter, publisher, and gallery owner Herwarth Walden to promote the German avant-garde in literature and art, the magazine Der Sturm (The Storm) was instrumental in introducing the work of the German Expressionists to the world and fostering artistic exchange across Europe. The September 1916 issue includes a reproduction of a drawing by the Italian Futurist Umberto Boccioni, for his 1911 painting Those Who Go (now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York). From a series titled States of Mind, the painting and the illustration depict the transitory nature of modern life as epitomized by the train station.
