Founded by the entrepreneurial painter, publisher, and gallery owner Herwarth Walden to promote the German avant-garde in literature and art, the magazine Der Sturm (The Storm) was instrumental in introducing the work of the German Expressionists to the world and fostering artistic exchange across Europe. The cover of the September 1912 issue features Reconciliation, a woodcut by Franz Marc, one of the founding members of the German group Der Blaue Reiter.
