Expanding on the traveling exhibition curated by Karl Kusserow, John Wilmerding Curator of American Art, this publication is inspired by the concept of the object lesson: the study of a material thing to communicate a larger idea. Object Lessons reimagines the Princeton University Art Museum’s collection of historical American art in light of contemporary perspectives on race, gender, and the environment.

This exhibition is made possible by the leadership support of the Terra Foundation for American Art. The accompanying publication is made possible by the generous support of Annette Merle-Smith; and by additional support from the Barr Ferree Foundation Fund for Publications, Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University.

This event is part of the Museum’s Late Thursdays programming, made possible in part by Heather and Paul G. Haaga Jr., Class of 1970, with additional support from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
